Syria is back on the world's technology and business map

Mastercard launches Mastercard Gateway payment platform in Syria

The platform lets businesses and financial institutions process digital payments through point-of-sale and online channels.

Mastercard has announced the launch of Mastercard Gateway in Syria, a platform that lets businesses and financial institutions process digital payments through point-of-sale and other electronic channels. Fintech Gate reported the announcement on 21 October 2026.

The gateway is available through Merchant Cloud, Mastercard's unified payments platform. According to the source, the platform gives merchants and companies access to payment solutions and services, including agentic commerce solutions, fraud protection, digital tokenization, data-driven insights and hosted payment options.

The launch comes as part of efforts to strengthen Syria's digital payments infrastructure, and after the first international payment in the country using bank payment cards in more than ten years. Mastercard describes the step as another move toward reconnecting Syria to the global payments system.

Mastercard says the gateway integrates its global payment technologies into local payments infrastructure. It says merchants can reach a wider range of customers, benefit from e-commerce opportunities and reduce reliance on cash. The platform also offers global digital companies and e-commerce platforms an easier route into the Syrian market.

Adam Jones, Mastercard's regional head for the Western Arab region, said reconnecting Syria to the international payments system is a highly important step in supporting economic recovery and opens new opportunities for individuals and businesses to take part in the global economy. Gurang Shah, Mastercard's executive vice president for merchant acceptance solutions, said the gateway lets Syrian banks speed up acceptance of digital payments by merchants, from large retailers to small and medium-sized businesses.
